There are few places in the United States that are as well known, for mountains, than Mount St. Helens. Following the eruption of the volcano in 2004-2008 the massive power of the mountain was well documented. Now you can climb the mountain, all 8,328 feet of it, and observe the beauty of the area surrounding the mountain.

The climb is not technical and usually takes 7 to 12 hours round-trip. If you are a hiker in good condition it will be a hike that you will truly enjoy. You will climb through beautiful evergreen/alder forest lands and over an ancient lava field, then on over 1.5 miles of volcanic ash to volcano’s rim where you will be able to peak into the steaming crater below. On clear days you will also be able to see other volcanoes including Mt. Ranier, Mt. Adams, Mt. Hood and Mt. Jefferson.

The USFS has limited the number of climbers to 100 per day from May 15 – October 21. During the other portions of the year, climbing occurs on snow and therefore does little or no damage to the resource so it is not restricted to the number of people. You can climb on your own or use one of the Mount St. Helens Institute guides. These guides are trained in biology, geology, and environmental science.

When preparing for your climb you will want to be well equipped. Below is a list of the food and equipment needed to have a safe experience atop Mount St. Helens:

Water: 3-4 liters per person
Food: High-energy food recommended. Bring enough for several small meals and snacks. Consider leaving extra in your car for when you return
Sun Protection: sunscreen, sunglasses with side protectors, hat, SPF lip balm
Hiking Boots: Lug-soled, waterproof, with ankle protection and ¾ shank
Gaiters: waterproof to keep rain, snow, ice and pumice out of your boots
Clothing: Dress in layers and include a warm hat, waterproof coat and pants.
First Aid Kit
Trekking Poles
Headlamp or Flashlight
Depending on the season and conditions, you may need an ice ax and crampons to summit Mount St. Helens. Conditions vary daily, even in summer, so be prepared.

You must have a permit to climb the mountain, get yours early.

Over the years the house was used as a home, a hospital and finally an apartment building. It was during the time that it was used as an apartment building that it caught fire and the third floor and roof were destroyed. Local citizens worked together to fund the reconstruction of the mansion along with the help of a grant.

The mansion is now the property of the village of LaConner and home to the La Conner Quilt & Textile Museum. They hold a three day show of Juried and Judged Quilts annually.

Do you want something different and fun for this summer? Then how about going to Seattle and watching the Seafair Hydorplane Races? It is a celebration that emcompasses a wide cariety of small neighborhood events leading up to several major city-wide celebrations. There is a Torchlight Parade and Run, the RAces and the Blue Angels.

It began in 1950 as an annual event but even before that there were races for everyone. The events start in July when there are Milk Carton Derby races where the boars are made out of empty milk cartons and race on Green Lake. It’s a great way to spend a day with your family and get some laughs out of the creations that the different teams come up with. Maybe another year you will want to enter one of your own.

The Seafair Half Marathon is there for those that want to run the 13.1 miles (or walk) or you can enter the full marathon and run the 26.2 mile course. That too much for you? The how about doing the 5 km course? See, something for everyone.

The shores of Lake WAshington at Seward Park is the locaiton of the Triathlon. This involves a half-mile swim, 12-mile bike ride, and 5 km run. You can enter either as a team or individually. It us usually held the thrid weekend of July.

The most popular event is the Seafair Cup, which is an American Boat Racing Associaiton unlimited hydroplane racing circuit stop at Stan Sayers Pits. These take place the end of July or the beginning of August and are responsible for drawing thousands of people to watch. Some spectators are on the shore and others are in their boats outside of the course to watch from there.

During this event the Blue Angles are brought to seattle to perform their aerial stunts. This is truly a spectacular show of skilled pilots showing off.

The Seafair Pirates are also part of the celebration even though they have sometimes been rather noisy and offensive antics at Seafair itself. The rest of the year the organizaiton works entertaining children in hsopitals and performing other acts of community service.

The Seattle Seafair Clowns also liven up the celebration. They have been an integral part of Seattles Seafair celebration for over 50 years. They too visit hospitals, nusrsing homes and retirement communities spreading laughter and good cheer.

The Seafair Session will run from June 25, 2011 to August 7. Come and enjoy the beauty and fun of the Seattle area.

If you want to go boating yourself, by 2015 all boat operators in Washington State 12 years and older will be required to hold a valid Boater Education Card. Requirements are being phased in as follows: 2011 – 35 and younger, 2012 – 45 and younger, 2013 – 50 and younger. For information about the Washington boater license you can visit BoaterExam . com.

A new business has opened in town that has brought new interest and excitement to the gateway community of Packwood, WA. The Hancock Gallery & Café is now open for business. Dick Hancock, a professional wildlife and nature photographer for over 25 years, decided to open his gallery in the same area his career began – Mt Rainier. His work is offered in large format, often life-sized, on canvas. His wife, Gloria Hancock, offers original paintings at the gallery. Her subjects are often inspired by her husband’s photography but she is masterful with portraitures of people and pets. The gallery has an associated café serving classic American fare and gourmet desserts. The Hancock Gallery & Café has become a destination location. Tourists and locals alike are helping to stimulate the local economy of Packwood by visiting the Hancock Gallery & Café and other businesses in the area.

The Hancock Gallery & Café has recently opened for business at 13016 US Hwy 12, Packwood, WA 98361. Renowned photographer, Dick Hancock, will be on hand to sign art pieces and answer questions related to his images. Gloria Hancock will also be unveiling new original paintings at the gallery.

It has been a lifelong dream for Dick Hancock to have his own gallery to display his spectacular wildlife photography. For over 25 years, he has traveled the world capturing wildlife images. His work has been featured in numerous national publications and he himself has been featured on national network television as a survivor of a cougar attack. He has called his work the Dick Hancock Signature Series. He produces his images on large format canvas, making the Signature Series very different from others.

Gloria Hancock has been painting for over 30 years. Her paintings are often of the natural world or depict people in everyday life. The gallery displays her original pieces and she also does commissioned portraitures of people and pets.

The gallery is in a building that holds a tremendous amount of Packwood’s history. Originally a dance hall, which converted to a tavern, which converted again to a café, Dick and Gloria felt it important to retain some of that history, while giving it a facelift. The decision to attach a café to the gallery has proven great for the community and tourists alike. Dick, keeping it in the family, hired his sister, Becky Wilson, to manage the café and gallery. “We want to create a place for the local community to consider their own, and we want to become a destination point for travelers on Highway 12”, Wilson said.

Dick is often asked what made him decide to locate his gallery in Packwood. “One, I wanted to build my gallery in the area where I started to take pictures – the shadow of Mt. Rainier; and two, we felt that we could be a blessing to the local community and help stimulate the interest in Packwood for many of the tourists that travel around Rainier”, his reply.

Come and enjoy the blooming of wildflowers in the park; fresh produce from Naches and Yakima; and the increase of nature seeking Northwesterners enjoying area trails such as Packwood Lake or the Goat Rocks Wilderness. There are several driving loops that visit some of Washington’s most treasured natural attractions – Mt Rainier, Mt St Helens and Mt Adams. The Hancock Gallery & Café is quickly becoming a destination milepost on the itinerary of people exploring the area.

The museum has been so popular and successful that it is going to build a new facility, which will be a permanent facility, on Olympia’s downtown waterfront. The Museum has outgrown the space it has been housed in three times in 10 years so a permanent home is a necessary and welcome addition to the area.

The Hands on Children’s Museum provides creative learning through fun, interactive exhibits and programs for children, families and school groups. The programs and participatory exhibits are designed specifically to encourage interaction and inquiry, as well as participation from the entire family. It is a fantastic way for connectivity between the children and families, learning together and playing together in an exciting and interesting environment.

Using things like sand to develop the children’s sensory senses is a great way for them to explore basic concepts such as wet and dry, volume, pouring and sifting. They develop three key area with this exhibit, physical development, motor skills and eye-hand coordination as well as cognitive development by letting the children explore changes in how the sand is different when wet or dry, they increase their vocabulary with words like molding, pouring and sifting and discovering that the same amount of sand in different containers look different. It also gives children a chance to imitate the play of peers and watch the adults through dramatic play. What a fun way to spend some time at the museum.

The children have the opportunity to care for the orphaned and infured animas in the Wildlife Rescue Center. They can also bring woodland creatue to life at the Puppet Theater and act out a wildlife play (every child likes to put on a play) on the Backyard Stage.

The kids and their parents will learn together about how to live healthier and happier lives when they shop in the Market & Grocery. They can harvest apples from the Orchard and pick vegetables from the Garden. Then they can load and drive the Delivery Truck, build a sandwich at the Healthy Choices Deli, and more.

The Art Studio provides the kids with a huge assortent of new and recycled art supplies to express ideas and create their own unique works of art.

There is even a spot for the littlest ones. The TotSpot is designed for parents and their children from age birth to four. There is a Soft Space aRea for infants and crawlers and age appropriate arts and crafts for those a little bigger.

Take the kids to the Working Waterfront where they can explore the engine room, galley, decks and bridge on the Cargo Ship. Lots of things to explore and learn in this exhibit.

All kids like to build things so the Built It display gives them the opportunity to create an unlimited array of paths for the Magnetic ball Run; arrange colorful gears to operate the gadgets at the Gear Table; create large-scale structures in the KidStruction Zone; drive, load and operate the construction site Dump Truck and more.

The Center is the home to three different theaters in the Tacoma area. It houses the Pantages Theater which seats 1169 and was built in 1918 (restored in 1983). The Rialto Theater which seats 742 which was also built in 1918 (restored in 1991) and Theatre on the Square which seats 302 and was built in 1993. These theatres serve as a presenter of leading artists on-stage. It also hosts one of the largest performing arts education programs in Washington State.

The Broadway Center provides a vital home to eight of Tacoma’s Resident Arts Organizaitons that form the core of the performing arts system in the South Puget Sound region: Northwest Sinfonietta; Puget Sound Revels; Tacoma City Ballet; Tacoma Concert Band; Tacoma Opera; Tacoma Philharmonic; Tacoma Symphony Orchestra; and Tacoma Youth Symphony Association.

The Pantages Theater started out as a live theater for 8 years and then was transformed into a movie theater. In 1032 the theater was purchased by Will Conner and known as the Roxy until the 1980′s when it was renamed the Pantages Theater. It was purchased by the city in 1978 and the refurishment was undertaken as part of the revitalization of the downtown area. It is the oldest of the Pantages Theaters still in operation.

The Rialto Theater opened as part of a national movie house chain. The Rialto resembles Vienna’s 1916 Redoutensaal, the fist “shoe box” shaped orchestral hall. Much of the original ornate plaster decoration remains today and is worth a trip to the area just to see it.

The Theatre on the Square is the third of the theaters for use by the citizens of the community.

Some of those that are at home in the theaters are the Northwest Sinfonietta, Tacoma Concert Band, Tacoma City Ballet, Tacoma Philharmonic, Tacoma Opera, Tacoma Symphony and the Tacoma Youth Symphony. With all of these entities involved you will be able to find something you will enjoy regardless of the time of year you visit Tacoma.

Directions
From I-5, take the City Center exit to Highway 705.
Follow Highway 705 to the “A” Street exit.
From “A” Street, turn left onto S. 11th Street.
For Park Plaza North Garage, turn right on Commerce.
Parking is to your right.
For the Pantages and Rialto Theaters and Theatre on the Square, continue

Klickitat Canyon Winery – Lyle, Washington

Now you can actually get VEGAN wine produced right here in Washington State. The Klickitat Canyon Winery produces vegan wines, no sulfites added, no yeasts, has no residual sugars and all the of the grapes come from the Columbia Gorge and varietals are 100% pure. For those that have been trying to find the perfect wines to fit with their vegan diet this is the place for you to go!

The grapes are the secret to the wines produced by this winery. The owners believe that the grapes make the wine from the natural yeasts found on the grapes so they don’t have to add any additional chemicals. The wine develops on its own merits and must be completely fermented to dryness before it is bottled. They are a certified organic processor.

The small Columbia Gorge Winery is a small winery owned and operated as a family business with great care and pride. The vintner, Robin Dobson, takes great pride in producing wines that are unlike the wines in other vineyards and hopes that you will come and taste their wines. Once you do they are sure you will come back time and again.

Robin was born in Berkeley, California. He moved to Geneva, Switzerland at the age of 9. He graduated from high school in Geneva, went on to college at UC Davis and then got her PhD in Plant Pathology at Washington State University. He is now a botanist/ecologist with the US Forest Service as well as working at the winery.

Working with him at the winery are his brothers, Richard and Christopher, his mother Julie. His young sons, Kiva, 14 and Tico, 9 along with his new partner Kathleen all help making the winery the place she loves and loves to share with you.

When you take a break from visiting the winery you may want to go wind surfing in the area around Hood River, Oregon. The scenery is also beautiful so take the time to enjoy nature while you are in the area.

The grapes grown near Hood River typically ripen with more difficulty due to cooler temperatures compared to those at The Dalles and further east. Across the Columbia River from Hood River is Underwood Mountain, an old volcano with deep volcanic soils. Celilo Vineyard, from which they obtain most of the grapes for their Columbia Gorge label, is on Underwood Mountain. This vineyard is developing a reputation for excellent grapes.

All of their wines are aged in oak and have relatively higher levels of acid and tannin than the wines of Oregon, California, and Eastern Washington. The wines re made to be cellared and drunk with food, as is the European tradition. Because of the process, the wines are very stable, and will not lose their flavor and freshness if left open. How many times have you opened a bottle to have to discard it after the party or dinner is over because it won’t hold? Most of the wines of this winery are best served at room temperature.

They produce only a very small quantity of wines each year (typically, only 600 cases). So, if you want Vegan, Organic wine you will want to order early to make sure they are available.

Gorge Crest Farms – Underwood, Washington

Come to one of the newer vineyards in the Columbia River Gorge area, the Gorge Crest Vineyards. With the first harvested grapes coming out in the fall of 2007 and is already ranked as one of the Top Ten Wineries in the State of Washington! Rick Ensminger, the manager of Celilo Vineyards, which borders Gorge Crest, designed the vineyard. With is knowledge of higher altitude, late season, varietals he knows what it takes to produce great grapes in this area.

The vineyard doesn’t try to achieve large yields, it goes for the smaller yields with highest quality. With agreements with Celilo and the Columbia Gorge Appellation the vineyard will supplement production to get the quantity needed for making great wine for your pleasure. These grapes are handcrafted to provide the perfect touch to produce great wines. All the grapes are de-stemmed, crushed and pressed by hand to eliminate stem and skin bitterness which is caused by high pressure hydraulic equipment.

The tanks are hand siphoned for the clean juice off the top during fermentation so that transfer can take place without disturbing sediment. The tanks at the winery are imported Italian stainless steel fermenting tanks produced by Marchisi. When the wine is ready it is aged and racked in hand made barrels of French and American Oak.

The wines of this facility are the Gewurztraminer which is a dry Alsatian style white; Riesling with its candied apple and honeysuckle aromas, the Pinot Gris which is a dry white, Pinot Noir which is a Burgundian style, the Merlot with its coffee and ripe cherry flavor and the Syrah with a rich cedar and licorice flavor. Try each and find the one that best suits your taste buds. Enjoy the adventure of trying the newer wines and the environment of the area.

Gorge Crest Farms was once part of a large corporate farming operation. Prior to that it was a dry-land orchard producing apples until "The Big Freeze" in the 1930′s took it out. Then it was used to grow pears but that market also closed down so the land was then part of the large corporate farming operation. In 2003 the owners of Gorge Crest purchased the parcel of land. It is now a thriving farming operation with the goal of providing you with the best wines possible.

If you are looking for the perfect venue for your event then you may want to consider the Gorge Crest Vineyards. It offers: Expansive views of the Columbia River Gorge and Hood River Valley with Mt.
Come and visit this family owned and operated winery in the Columbia River Gorge and you may never want to leave. The Columbia River Gorge area has become a wine Mecca of sorts for those who enjoy quality wines produced by small wineries. The attention to detail, the careful selection of the grapes and the processing of the wines are of utmost importance to these vintners.
